Mathematics orientation week (O-Phase)
When and where does the O-Phase take place?
The plan for this year’s O-Phase:
We will meet for the first time on Monday at 10 a.m. in the Mathematical Institute (Bunsenstraße 3-5). Many parts of the O-Phase take place in smaller groups (8-10 people), which will remain the same throughout the O-Phase. The division into groups takes place in the morning. You can state your wishes there if you have already met people you want to be in a group with, but you can also use the opportunity to get to know more new fellow students.
Those who cannot take part in the O-Phase in person should contact us by email. In this case, we will send you all the important information in digital form.
Crossover day:
On Crossover Day, all first-year students from the teaching profile who have not yet been part of the Mathematics O-Phase will receive all the important information for starting their studies. All participants who are already part of the Mathematics O-Phase have the day off.
Rough outline of the O-Phase
On Monday morning, as mentioned above, you will be divided into groups and, while the groups are filling up, you can get to know each other, talk about your expectations and wishes and ask your tutors any questions that are on your mind. Afterwards, there will be a short welcome speech in which we, the organization team, will introduce ourselves and announce the further course of the O-Phase. Afterwards, you will get to know each other a little better in the groups - your tutors have prepared a few fun activities for this. In the meantime, you can have breakfast/brunch together in the groups. To ensure that there is something for everyone, you have already filled out the survey and told us about any eating habits. In the afternoon, there will be study advice, where you will be helped to put together your timetable. A pub quiz will then take place from 4 p.m. You can find a group for this yourself, but you are also welcome to stay in your small group.
Afterwards there is a games night that starts at 7 p.m. in the Institute for Computer Science.
Tuesday starts with a technical introduction, where you will mainly get an introduction to the various university systems, e.g. studIP and FlexNow. Then there is a selection of workshops in the morning. We do not provide lunch - you can take the opportunity to try out the cafeteria, for example. In the afternoon there is a Göttingen rally in the groups from Monday. Please arrive on time, as we want to start at 2 p.m. and it is difficult to join later. In the evening we have an awards ceremony and finally a party in the Stilbrvch.
Wednesday morning is the so-called cross-over day, which is for all students in the dual-subject bachelor’s program who were unable to attend the student advisory service on Monday. There is a little break here for non-dual-subject students. In the afternoon there is a faculty rally, where you can get to know the math buildings. We then end the evening together in small groups. Most groups will sit in one of the many pubs in Göttingen.
Thursday is our last day. In the morning there is a hearty breakfast and the opportunity to get together in small groups one last time. Alternatively, there are a few workshops offered. To round things off, we have a Flunkyball tournament and then an NC party.
Where do I go if I have a double bachelor’s degree?
The O-Phase for teaching students takes place this year on Tuesday, October 15th. On this day, all information for the teaching degree course will be bundled together so that you can attend the events in your subjects on the remaining days of the O-Phase.
What can you expect on Tuesday? You start at 8:30 a.m. from Café Campus and from there you walk together to the Waldweg.
The next day (the Wednesday of the O-Phase) is a full day of „crossover day“, on which events for your second subject take place at the respective faculty (you can find out when and where on the respective homepage). So if you are otherwise attending the O-Phase of your other subject or are not with us on Tuesday for other reasons, you can join us again on Wednesday morning for the Methemtaics or Computer Science study advice, especially for 2-subject bachelor students.
If you are studying mathematics and computer science in the 2-subject bachelor, you can choose which O-Phase you go to. Many activities, such as the Göttingen Rally or the Pub Quiz, take place together. However, due to the much smaller number of computer science teaching students, we recommend that teaching students with this subject combination go to the Computer Science O-Phase on Monday first.
